Which tests do I need to take?
The UW campus you are attending will tell you which tests you should take. If you have questions, you can review the information pages for the campus you are attending for more information.

What is the difference between Math A and Math B?
Math B is the proctored version of the UW System Math placement test, while Math A is the non-proctored version of the placement test.
The UW campus you are attending will tell you which test you should take. In general, you will be advised to take one or the other, but not both. Campuses that require Math-B will not utilize the test results from Math-A. The Math-B test is offered both in-person as a paper and pencil test, and online via Live Remote Proctoring (LRP). The campus you are attending might offer options to take the in-person Math-B test without paying a proctoring fee, so please review the information from your campus about your options before scheduling an appointment. There is a non-refundable fee of $40 to schedule a Math-B appointment via LRP.

When do I need to take my tests?
You should complete your placement tests at least 2 weeks before your advising program.

How will I receive the results of my tests?
Interpretation of test scores is unique to each UW campus. You will receive your placement test scores and what they mean when you come to campus for orientation in the summer or fall. Test scores will not be sent from the Center and cannot be given over the phone.

I've been accepted to more than one UW campus or I may change my mind about which campus I am attending. Do I need to take placement tests for each of these campuses?
No. All UW campuses have access to your scores. Therefore, you only need to take the tests once and whichever campus you attend will have access to your scores, regardless of the campus you indicated you would be attending. However, note that different campuses may have different testing requirements. Please refer to the communications from the campus you will be attending and only take the placement tests you are advised to take one time. If you have questions about how to proceed when switching to a UW campus that has different testing requirements, you can contact the Center for Placement Testing at frontdesk@exams.wisc.edu for assistance.

Who should I contact if I have any questions regarding placement testing requirements at a specific campus, such as which tests to take and when?
Please review the information pages for the campus you are attending.

Are the computer based tests different than the paper version?
The format of the questions may be slightly different as required for display on a computer screen, but we have done our best to make them appear as similar as possible. The computer based version will also offer an on-screen scientific calculator for use during the math exam. No other calculator will be allowed.

Will I see my results immediately if I take the tests on computer?
No. After your exams are completed, they will be transmitted to the Center for Placement Testing and to the campus you will be attending. Each campus has its own policy about how and when to communicate the results back to the students. The results will be reported the same way regardless of the exam format chosen.
